In 17th century almost all sails, ropes, nets, uniforms and paper were made excusively from hemp due to its water and salt-resistant character and incredible durability. 50-100 tons of hemp fiber was needed for one basicly equipped sailboat and even these fibers needed to be replaced within two years!
